Explore: Lake Miramar – walk, run, bike…your choice

Lake Miramar

It’s the start of 2023, and San Diego has been experiencing quite a bit of rain. More than we locals are used to seeing. I’m not a big fan of hiking through mud, and Luke, the pup, has very sensitive paws and will not step in wet grass. He is not a fan of the mud, either! Therefore, trail hiking is not much of an option these days, with many trails being affected by rainstorms. It was time to walk at a reliable spot that we enjoyed.

So we headed out to Lake Miramar when the rain stopped. Lake Miramar is located within the city limits of San Diego and is pretty centralized within San Diego County. Lake Miramar is not your traditional lake but more of a reservoir. There are rules and regulations since it is not a traditional lake. So be sure to read up on this on the city’s website. Lake Miramar is an excellent place for walks, and many ride their bikes, rollerblade, and run. Pick your option!

The benefits of Lake Miramar are that it is paved, and the road that circles the lake is wide. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the mud during your walk or being stuck behind slow walkers. Bikers will not run over you; you will not have to be concerned about other dogs getting too close to you if you have a reactive dog. The entire lake walk will consist of about 5 miles round trip. Many people say it feels longer because of the way the lake bends. I recommend that you walk the whole five miles if you can complete it. It’ll be well worth your time.

I would go to the lake after work to run and never had issues with parking. Now that I work from home, I like to walk with Luke in the mornings. Parking is more accessible the earlier you can get there. I went around mid-morning to the afternoons and could not find parking. There was quite a bit of waiting or giving up and finding another location to walk.

Once you park, you can walk in either direction around the lake. Please ensure you know when the gates close before you start your walk. You’ll want to ensure you are back at your car before the gates close. The gate closure depends on the time of year. There are mile markers throughout your walk. There are picnic areas by the parking lot and the back of the lake if you want to stop to enjoy a meal during your walk. Porta potties are also available if needed.

Lake Miramar is an excellent option for a walk and is dog friendly. Don’t forget your water, which is 5 miles if you finish the loop. Make sure to enjoy the views of the lake and even the views that overlook Miramar and Mira Mesa.

Make sure to try the walk around Lake Miramar and Happy Vanventuring.
