My mom inspires today’s recipe since she always made this and continues to make this when we go family camping. Still, I wanted to share it today because it’s National Bean Day (January 6th).
If you are like me, when you go camping, you want easy camp meals to cook and easy meals for cleanup. Especially if you van camp in a minivan like me. Space is limited!
A camp meal family favorite that my mom, sister, and I make is the Chili Dog. We each have our own variation of this camp meal; mine is the most basic. My recipe is the easiest because I do not want to prep and clean. Plus, I am the pickiest adult eater in my family.
The Meal
The chili dog for my camp meal consists of four simple ingredients.
A can of turkey chili with beans
Hot dogs
Brioche hot dog buns
Shredded cheddar cheese
Variation
These ingredients are interchangeable. You can use any chili you prefer, any choice of hot dog, choose whatever buns you like, and any cheese variation. Also, feel free to add additional toppings, such as freshly sliced onions. The sky is the limit!
I typically buy all my ingredients at Trader Joe’s. I highly recommend their turkey chili and brioche buns. But again, these are all essential ingredients you can buy at many grocery stores.
Directions
Heat chili as directed on the can
Cook the hot dogs according to the package
Grill or toast the hot dog buns
Top the hot dog buns with chili and cheese
Enjoy!
Time
The turkey chili with beans hot dog is a simple and quick camp meal. It typically takes me less than 15 minutes to make and even less time to eat. My cleanup consists of washing my pot and pan, and done.
P.s. remember to pack the can opener. That’s a necessity to make the meal easy to prepare.
